RE: Now don't be shocked. I think ERVs latest blog on XMRV is brilliant
So Silverman has achieved the greatest worldly (heavenly?) distinction a scientist can obtain: making ERV proud.

But seriously, this is an important point about expression. I think in Paprotka they claimed that one of the Pre's was replication competent, but have they never actually demonstrated this sufficiently?

If indeed both Pre's are replication incompetent, would it not also be theoretically plausible for the recombination to have taken place in the presence of a third, unknown, replication-competent retrovirus (let's call it a human P-MRV)? In such a situation, the active retrovirus went undetected in both Paprotka and the more recent Silverman papers (as it's sequence is unknown and sufficiently different from VP62 to go undetected), but it was capable of providing the viral machinery that allowed for both Pre's to end up packaged together and susceptible to recombination. In this sense, the resultant recombinant would be a true red herring that distracts from the presence of a novel, genuine human retrovirus. (I'm not sure if this scenario is actually plausible. Even if it is, I'm not saying it would be reasonable or even remotely probable, only that it could be a consistent interpretation of the data that allows for both a novel HGRV as well as Coffin's immaculate recombination. This is also not to say that there aren't other issues with Coffin's recombination story.)

If he wants to say two viruses created XMRV in the 90s in that cell line he needs all these pieces of evidence to only suggest it. Currently he doesn't have one.

1) The actual mice used to create the cell line shown to contain both ERV-1 and ERV-2.
2) Evidence of expression by ERV-2. ERV-1 is defective.
3) All assays used to detect virus in later xenografts used on early and original tumor.
4) All stages of xenograft and original tumour all proven to relate to the person who's cells are in 22Rv1 cells.
5) Proof that there is no cross contamination of other human cells into any stage of that cell line.

That's just for starters. Won't mention the rest. We don't need to. He hasn't provided any evidence of this so far.

Nice summary

Once those MRV retroviruses from ME patient's tissue are completely sequenced , Coffin will be irrelevant to HGRV politics and science can begin.
